The road season ends not with a bang but with a whimper,
1:06:02 at Fifield on yet another windy day. Better than last time, but still not good. With the eventual winner off 24 minutes behind me, I had time to get round to the start on my first lap just before he started, so I got a chance going up Hawthorn Hill for the second time to see where he was making up time as he flew past like I was standing still.

I don't usually bother with the trek down to Farnham, but father had entered and I thought that my presence would pretty much force him to ride all the way round to avoid the shame of pulling out after one lap. In terms of ensuring some positive news from a lacklustre season, it turned out to be a sensible plan, as my
59:13 was my fastest ride of the year so far at any distance.

I thought I had the West of Windsor course under control, but thanks to a cold in the middle of the week I was short of both strength and breath and could only manage to amble round in
1:7:17, even slower than last time.

A best ever
27:12 on 72 fixed scored me third place in the club medium gear championship, despite a puncture which left me rolling slowly across the line on the rim. A first race outing for the Hirame for a couple of years proved a more fruitful choice than the usual Rourke, although with all the uncontrolled variables it's not clear how much was down to the shorter cranks and how much the enforced use of my best wheels, 46/17 proving a hair's breadth over 72 inches with the 25c tyres on the Hirame's day to day wheels.
