One of those nights on the Thicket when everything goes wrong, like hitting one of the ruts filling-rattlingly wrong, getting baulked at the turn and getting chopped by an idiot car driver at one of the dumb-ass pinch points just as I was about the hammer past Gurpal. For all that, I still finished in
24:41, and then punctured 50 yards past the finish line.

On the hottest weekend of the year, in uninterrupted blazing sunshine, a rare occurrence of two afternoon races. Both would have been far more pleasant with early morning starts, before the unpleasantness of both fierce heat and uncooling breezes took hold. The 25 was abandoned after one lap, as another half an hour in the conditions was only going to result in more sunburn and saddle soreness, but the Sunday 14.3 was completed, albeit at a
leisurely pace just over a minute slower than last year.

25:02 reflected a little progress and much warmer conditions, and at 93rpm may be getting towards the top end of what I can do on 87", given that all my best rides have been done with a cadence in the mid eighties. Last time trial on the SLR XP, which worked for two hours on the track but doesn't seem to suit even half an hour in the TT position. The 585 gets an SLR Kit Carbonio, and the SLR moves across to the Koga.

The Thicket certainly didn't seem fast on a chilly evening, a rather poor
25:35 doesn't suggest that a change of sprocket is needed just yet. I wish it were just sandbagging to fix the handicap for the second half of the season, but apart from holding out on the best tyres I'm really trying to go fast.

Dropping neatly into the middle of the range of times for Fifield this year,
26:15 placed me squarely in the middle rank of the club, well off the pace of the fast men but just at the head of the middle markers.
