Having got nicely warmed up on the rollers ready for a 19:47 start, with only Peter joining me on the starting list, I then had to sit cooling off for another 5 minutes while a bunch of triathletes signed on, having turned up at exactly 19:45. I thought I had seen all of the stupidity of which triathletes are capable when attempting proper cycling, but this was a new one for me. With a brisk south westerly wind, an average speed of just 24.8mph to the turn was hardly encouraging, but on the longer downwind leg my speed held up well, with 24.7 at the high point of the Burchetts Green roundabout followed by the usual charge down the hill picking up speed all the way to an eventual
25.2mph average.

On Wednesday, my
23:56 gave me exactly the same winning margin as last week. On Thursday, only the very early
starters stayed dry, and with heavy rain from only a couple of miles into my ride I soon sat up.

A less than stunning
1:5:30 at Fifield, possibly down to too little breakfast as the third lap was about half a minute slower than the second.

Again with the moving goalposts; tonight's
23:49 would have been my fastest of the year had I not ridden last night. 12
th place, which I suppose is better than 13
th. A very different ride from last night, with the north-westerley wind providing enough drag going out, and enough help coming back, to make the average speed the same both ways.

Those who were put off by the afternoon showers missed a lovely dry and calm night at the Thicket. Fortunately, everybody good was either discouraged by the earlier wet weather or had something better to do, and my
23:38 was fastest of the night

It seemed less unpleasant to race than to train, so I went out on Wednesday and did
24:12, then Thursday for a
24:35 and my habitual 13
th place.
