A shiny new 14 tooth sprocket for tonight, lifting the gear to all but a hundred inches. Pretty handy on the way out, with the wind reversed from last week I was nearly 2mph faster to the turn, and not as bad as I thought it was going to be on the way back. Bang on 25mph average was more of an improvement than most people, including the

Just because I happened to be in the area, I rode the Hounslow 25 on the Fifield course. With the wind in the wrong direction and my natural aversion to mornings, it was harder going than the Sunday afternoon MDCC affairs, and I struggled round in

Once again, the correct equipment for racing tonight was a spinnaker, with the wind causing an even more asymmetric run than last week. Coming back almost 1mph faster than going out is just wrong. The
result was posted wrong as at this writing, but tenth place was a decent outcome, with a couple of rivals dropping behind me despite my 10 second decline on last week.

It is not often that one acheives a personal best; in my case, not since setting my 10 mile time in 1991. Fortunately, I never rode a good 50 when I was young and fit, so it only took a fairly decent day and a little fitness to set a
new mark this morning, taking some seven minutes off the record set in 1987.

Plenty of wind tonight made it hard work getting out to the turn, but much easier coming back. Average speed was actually slightly lower going out than overall, compared with calm conditions when the turn should be reached about 0.5mph quicker. Still not troubling the
top ten, although I might have sneaked in if I'd concentrated on the race rather than taking it as an opportunity to train for Sunday, with a warm up lap at over 22.5mph possibly being enough to cost me the required 5 seconds.

Second to finish, and finished
second. A smaller field on the Drift Road than last time, and a good day for fixed judging by the result.

There are altogether too many people driving about on a Thursday evening, and most of them seem to be getting in my way. I wasn't the only one who found conditions a bit slower
tonight, so at least I didn't have a good ride ruined. Although getting severely balked at Burchetts Green on the way out felt like it lost me a lot of time, the virtue (or perhaps disadvantage) of the data logging system is that claims about how much time was lost can be analysed in the cold LCD backlight of day.
